New Orleans Photo Alliance Announces the Annual $5000 Clarence John Laughlin Award

The New Orleans Photo Alliance is pleased to announce its offering of an annual $5000 award to recognize and reward a fine art photographer who is creating or has completed a significant body of photographic work.

The Clarence John Laughlin Award was created by the New Orleans Photo Alliance to support the work of photographers who use the medium as a means of creative expression. It honors the life and work of Clarence John Laughlin (1905-1985), a New Orleans photographer best known for his surrealist images of the American South. The Clarence John Laughlin Award grants one $5000 prize annually to a photographer whose work exhibits sustained artistic excellence and creative vision. John Wood, Editor of 21st Editions, will serve as the inaugural juror.

This new award is open to emerging and established photographers who reside in the U.S. The online application process requires a portfolio of 10-20 photographs, a written statement, a bio or CV, and a $25 application fee. The application deadline is September 15, 2010. Only one recipient will be selected to receive the $5,000 award.

This is a terrific opportunity for us to support the creativity of photographers and to make their work available to the public. said NOPA President George Long. The Award serves as a compliment to our Michael P. Smith Fund for Documentary Photography, which offers opportunity and prestige to some exceptionally talented and deserving photographers.

The New Orleans Photo Alliance will announce the winner on November 1st and present the prize during this year’s PhotoNOLA festival in December 2010. Complete details, guidelines and an application form are available at:

About Clarence John Laughlin
Louisiana-born Clarence John Laughlin (14 August 1905-2 January 1985) photographed and wrote about things that interested him and that he thought others should notice, too. Laughlin found hidden meanings and universal truths in a variety of sources: everyday objects, the architecture of New Orleans, Louisiana’s plantations, and Victorian architecture of the United States. He interpreted these subjects, and others, through black and white photographs, accompanied by texts he composed to steer the viewer in certain directions about the photographs’ contents. Collage, multiple exposures, combination printing, and hand-coloring were among the tools he incorporated in crafting his pictures. His 1948 Ghosts Along the Mississippi was critically acclaimed and remained in print for some four decades. Museums around the world house his prints. Prior to his death, his archive of photographs and writing was acquired by The Historic New Orleans Collection.

About the New Orleans Photo Alliance
The New Orleans Photo Alliance was formed by a diverse group of photographers in 2006 to foster community and opportunities for photographers in the Gulf South. It is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to encourage the understanding and appreciation of photography. NOPA currently serves more than 350 members from Louisiana and throughout the United States. Since its inception NOPA has sponsored numerous photographic exhibitions, workshops and educational programs, including PhotoNOLA, the annual photography festival held each December in New Orleans. In 2009, NOPA instituted the Michael P. Smith Fund for Documentary Photography, a $5000 annual grant.

Résistances :: 15 years of photographic alternative

How to celebrate 15 years of photography if not by asserting the strong and emblematic values of an artistic path that has kept on crystalizing with the years.

In the midst of the international crisis that photography has been undergoing–a crisis of meaning as well as a crisis for those professionals who have had to change course to survive–we have decided to invite concerned practitioners. We have the honor of introducing you to tonight’s showing conceived by Michel Poivert: Inner Self dealing with the presence of spirits, quite a challenge in our materialistic world. François Lauchon, with Xavier Zimbardo’s help (Fight For Foto) has managed to salvage Rapho, the famous French photo agency, from ruthless dismembering. With images selected from the agency’s archives we will celebrate intense moments of resistance throughout the 20th century. Purpose, the webmag / e-zine, has been advocating highly humanistic values through the choices of images and projects that they have made, carefully watching and analyzing the relationships developing between a market-driven economy and simple human beings. Another of our night-projection will be dedicated to them. As for Christian Gattinoni, the editor of lacritique.org he has accepted our offer and will act as the curator for Identity Lab, a project by L’Évadée collective. Questioning issues developed around the concept of “identity” he will take on, in his own way, a posture of resistance.

Finally, L’Arlésienne, another of Voies Off productions and night showings is intended to be a testimony of the festival’s anchoring in the city of Arles as well as a way for us to thank all the friends who have accepting our invitation to collaborate or simply join the ever-increasing numbers of our audience and supporters.

Although leaving most of this year’s night projections to the responsibilities of our renowned guests, as usual, Voies Off will celebrate and reward creativity during the nights dedicated to the selections for the 2010 Voies Off Prize.

This year over 60 candidates will be competing for our prize of international reputation.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our sponsors who have allowed us again to present you with such an entertaining and challenging program: from local government to various public institution and private sponsors. Moreover Voies Off would not exist without the scores of volunteers who have supported and labored at our project for so many years.

The whole Voies Off team is waiting for you from July 3rd to July 10th to celebrate its 15th anniversary in the inner yard of the Archbishop’s Palace.

Christophe Laloi, artistic director

www.revistadeartes.com.ar

The festival is held from 5 September through 31 October (opening Sept 4th) with the Fries Museum as it’s central location. In a continuation of the Frisian Noorderlicht tradition, the exhibition will focus primarily on topical developments in the non-Western world, as visualised by non-Western and Western photographers. Submissions are welcome starting 15 February through 12 April 2010.

Theme: non-Western rural areas

For its upcoming photo festival Noorderlicht wants to research the contemporary changes in non-Western rural areas. UN reports sketch a sombre picture of rural life in the non-Western world. The prospects for its inhabitants are even worse than those of the slum-dwellers in the cities. Poverty is rampant and there is a lack of schooling. Social mobility is limited to an exodus of the young to the city, so that the countryside is ageing. It is expected that by 2030 only 40% of the world’s population will be living in rural areas. In that year 80% of the urban population will be outside of the West, which means that particularly what are now smaller cities in Asia and Africa can expect rapid expansion by natural growth.

How is rural life changing in the current urbanised and global economy? Is it possible, against all economic logic, to find new values for rural life?

The European Publishers Award for Photography, now in its 17th year, is a major initiative to encourage the publication of contemporary photography.

We are delighted to announce that the 2010 Award will again be sponsored byHeidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. The company is known world-wide for its Heidelberg printing presses which are recognised as being synonymous with the highest quality of offset printing.

The 2010 Jury will be held in Athens. Apeiron Photos will be the Project Leader.

Open to photographers worldwide, the competition is a unique collaboration between six European Publishers – Actes Sud (France), Apeiron (Greece), Dewi Lewis Publishing (United Kingdom), Edition Braus (Germany), Lunwerg Editores (Spain) and Peliti Associati (Italy).

The competition requires the submission of a substantial, completed and unpublished photographic book project. The winning project is then published in book form simultaneously by each of the publishers in their own country and in their own language, resulting in perhaps the most extensive cultural collaboration currently existing in Europe.

The winning book will be published in autumn 2010.

Specific Object / David Platzker is pleased to announce a call for entries for the 2009 Specific Object Publication of the Year Award. Since 2004, Specific Object has annually selected a Specific Object Publication of the Year. Winners of the Award receive a cash prize of $500 and the title of Specific Object Publication of the Year.

Rules for consideration for the Specific Object 2009 Publication of the Year

Work[s] that will be considered are artists’ publications of any kind including, but not limited to:

Artists’ books, audio CDs, DVDs, exhibition catalogues, monographs, periodicals or any other physically published work in which an artist has directly participated in the creation.

Special consideration will be given to publications that are highly disseminatable – that is, publications that are published in sizable press runs and publications that are affordable to a wide audience. However, there are no limits to what constitutes these positions. The physical properties of a work will be considered as will the contents of the work as a whole. That is, great production values will not help work[s] with poorly considered contents and vice versa. Publications must be published within a given year for consideration as noted by either the date of copyright [2009] within the publication or the publisher’s testament to date of publication.

A physical copy of each work for consideration must be submitted to Specific Object. Work[s] submitted become the sole property of Specific Object. Under no circumstance will work[s] submitted for consideration be returned to the submitter. Specific Object will not consider work[s] presented by any other means such as, but not limited to, PDFs, web links, dummies, mock-ups, or pre-publication samples. A final copy of the publication MUST be provided to Specific Object for consideration.

Specific Object, and other judges to be named, will judge the work[s] submitted and announce the winner of the Award in March 2009.

Work[s] for consideration for the 2009 Award must be received by Specific Object by February 12, 2010.

Specific Object will not consider any work[s] for which Specific Object, its employees or contest judges have had any involvement within.

To be considered work[s] must be mailed to:

David Platzker / Specific Object
601 West 26th Street, Room M285, New York, NY 10001

Works should be accompanied by a cover letter stating that enclosed work[s] is to be considered for the Award. The cover letter should make note of the number of copies of the work that have been produced and the work’s retail price[s], publisher and / or distribution information, and contact information to whom notification of Award may be sent. Do NOT submit any additional material such as biographies, reviews, slides, or other work[s] that are not for consideration for the Award.

Soliciting unsolicited exhibition proposals

Continuing our annual Unsolicited Proposal Program, we will accept 600-word, idea-based proposals for evaluation by an international panel of apexart associates (curators, artists, writers, philosophers). Submissions are reviewed independently, anonymously and without visual support material-they are evaluated solely on the strength of the idea. No mountain too high, no river too deep!

Previous curatorial experience is not required, and will not factor into the selection process.

The two proposals with the highest ratings will be presented at apexart in the 2010-11 season (September 2010 to July 2011). For those in or outside the field, this program is a unique opportunity to have a professionally mounted exhibition in New York City!

Applications are welcomed and encouraged from around the world. Visit the site for more info, guidelines, past winners, and to apply.

Apexart’s exhibitions and public programs are supported in part by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Carnegie Corporation of New York, Edith C. Blum Foundation, Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, The Greenwich Collection Ltd., The William Talbott Hillman Foundation, and with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York State Council on the Arts.

Artist Residency in Amsterdam

3-5 years track record required | Applications now being accepted

The Rijksakademie has fifty-five studios. Annually, approximately half of these become available for new residents. In 2009, twenty-three artists were selected for a residency out of 1900 applications from all over the world. Resident artists have usually successfully completed their (art) studies and have already worked independently as artists for three to five years prior to their application. Experience shows that a residency at the Rijksakademie at this stage of their careers has the greatest impact.

One is initially admitted for a work period of one year (January to December). Whether a second year is considered worthwhile, is decided in mutual consultation.

The selection procedure consists of a number of rounds. Demonstrable artistic quality and development potential are the decisive factors here. Following the first selection rounds in April/May, a number of candidates are invited for an interview in May/June at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. The successful candidates are announced at the beginning of July.

Application for the 2011 residency

One can apply for the coming residency (starting in January 2011) between December 1, 2009 and February 1, 2010. Note that your complete application has to be with us by February 1, 2010. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

2902 Gallery is an artist-run gallery dedicated to promoting the appreciation of the photographic arts. As the largest photo art gallery in Southeast Asia, 2902 Gallery presents shows of both local and international artists. 2902 Gallery organizes artist talks, seminars and workshops for photographers and the general public to further enhance the appreciation of the art of photography.

In the past year, the Gallery has hosted close to 20 exhibitions with the participation of more than 50 photographers. This is also the festival office and main exhibition space for the inaugural Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF) in 2008. This year, the gallery is showcasing creative new works from talented students & graduates from local institutions, and new bodies of work from established photographers.

Over the past two decades, Chinese contemporary art has become a major presence in the international art world. The diversity of work by China’s leading artists now commands the attention of curators, critics, collectors, scholars, and the global art community.
Hi Folks,

Finally, after more than six weeks of trekking to opening receptions, lectures, screenings, dinners, lunches, brunches and other art and social engagements, the FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2009 Photography Festival – our 15th Anniversary – has come to a close. For those of you who have not had a chance to visit, a few fine exhibits will remain on display well into November and December, and at least a couple of them will be around through the first months of of 2010. Dates and times are available in the 2009 Exhibitions & Events Schedule section of our web site.

We are very thankful for your participation and interest in FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA. It is with the collaboration, the support, and the efforts of everyone involved – exhibiting artists, institutions, private galleries and businesses, curators, the public, the media, city government, government entities of other countries, etc. – that our unique festival has become such a successful endeavor.

Defying all economy-based predictions, FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2009, with over seventy exhibitions and events spread out between the last week in August and the first week in October, has been one of our largest and longest festivals on record, and has also, surprisingly, generated substantial sales of photographic art. Additionally, if you browse through the FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2009 exhibits posted in our SAFOTO Blog (we were able to include most of them) you will notice that the ingestibles at opening receptions (food, beverages, etc.) were copious, to say the least. This catering extravaganza, plus the the printing, mounting and framing of all the works on display, the promotional printed matter, the advertising, the signage at galleries, the bands, musicians, DJ’s and other entertainment at various venues, the flowers and decorations, gasoline and travel expenses, impulse purchases, etc., etc.; make for a very significant economic footprint, which is one of the salient sources of pride for our festival.

But ultimately, the most important aspect of the FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA Festival is the personal commitment of creative capital that you – each and every one of you – bring to bear every year for the benefit of the many communities and constituencies that compose the City of San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country.

We hope to see you all again in 2010, when – in partnership with the City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs and the Instituto Cultural de Mexico – FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA-SAFOTO will join in the commemorative celebrations for the centennial of the 1910 Mexican Revolution and the bicentennial of the 1810 Mexican Wars of Independence from Spain. The general (non-compulsory) theme suggested for participants in FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2010 will be An Interpretive Contemporary Approach to Revolution and Independence in Mexico: The Significance of Cultural Migration and the Social and Economic Impact of These Events in Texas. This may sound like a mouthful of academic artspeak, but it is just a general theme and the emphasis is on Interpretive and Contemporary, which allows for a wide berth of expressive options.

We wish you all good fortune and good health, and a wonderful holiday season.
