Wabi Sabi exhibition organizers, Dr. Mimi Duvall, Associate Professor of Fine Arts, and Deborah Keller-Rihn, Adjunct Professor of Arts & Humanities, Northwest Vista College.

Wabi Sabi is a Japanese concept that celebrates the beauty of the ordinary, the simple, the humble, the imperfect and the impermanent.

This exhibit was inspired by a discussion of beauty in a meeting of San Antonio photographers, in which a book by Crispin Sartwell called The Six Names of Beauty was mentioned. Wabi Sabi is one of the six names of beauty that Sartwell discusses, and I thought it would give the exhibit a unifying theme, and would also be a teachable concept for the students at Northwest Vista College.

I am very thankful to the artists who created work for the exhibit, the teachers who inspired and motivated their students, and the students who so enthusiastically grappled with the concept to create such lovely photographs. Thanks also go to Barbara Dean Hendricks and Dr. Mimi Duvall for helping me organize the show. I am also very appreciative of the enthusiastic support received from Vinnie Bradford, Department Chair of the Northwest Vista College Department of Fine and Performing Arts and Kinesiology.
