Josefina Niggli was an author, playwright, actor, teacher, and photographer.
Born near Monterrey, she came to San Antonio during the Revolution and was later
part of the city’s lively arts scene, during the depression. In 1935 she joined the Playmakers
at the University of North Carolina. In 1945 she published her book, Mexican Village,
on which the 1953 MGM film Sombrero, was based. Niggli published two more
well-received novels, Step Down, Elder Brother (1947) and A Miracle For Mexico (1964).
She had a life-long interest in photography, and some of her surviving images
are included in the exhibit and in the SAFOTO WEB GALLERIES.

Patricia Mendoza is an art historian and independent curator
based in Mexico City. She is the founder of Fotoseptiembre
in Mexico, and the founder and former director of Centro
de la Imagen in Mexico City. She is also the former director
of the Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca.
Patricia is one of the most influential figures in contemporary
photography and has been an awards juror for international
photography organizations like Hasselblad, PhotoPress,
Mother Jones and Black Crows.
Patricia Mendoza’s lecture will address how historic social
and cultural shifts affect, and are affected by, notions of
land, identity and image.

of the crude realities of the revolutionary war and other
political and social events before, during, and after the
Mexican Revolution; a civil war that shook Mexico for nearly
two decades. Agustín Víctor Casasola (1874 - 1938) is considered
one of the first documentary photographers of Latin America.

The Witte Museum’s 1910 - A Revolution Across Borders
exhibition commemorates the Centennial of the Mexican
Revolution, the pivotal political conflict that shaped our
understanding of Mexico as a nation, and the cultural
history of South Texas.
As the premier museum dedicated to South Texas heritage,
the Witte presents time-period photography and artifacts
from its extensive collection, illuminating the effect of this
historical event on the people of the region.

Lecturer at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.
Defined as a Poet of the Ordinary by the Los Angeles
Times, Keith Carter has produced enigmatic and haunting
photographs over four decades; images which have been
exhibited in the United States, Europe, and Latin America.
His works are included in the permanent collections of major
national museums.
