New Festival: Caochangdi PhotoSpring in Beijing
The first annual Caochangdi PhotoSpring will be launched on April 17, 2010. Working 
on a three-year partnership with “Les Rencontres d’Arles,” the Caochangdi PhotoSpring will be the very first time that Arles’ programs will be shown outside of France.
During the opening week of festivities, numerous exhibitions, lectures, evening concerts, documentary film screenings, and slideshows will take place all across the Caochangdi district of Beijing. Other issues are the announcement of the 2010 Three Shadows Photography Award winner, the presentation of the 2009 Discovery Award of “Les Rencontres d’Arles” Laureate, a symposium on Photography: “Creativity vs. The Market,” artists’ Open Studios, as well as portfolio reviews by a panel of international professionals. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet with photography experts from China and abroad.
All events will be open to the public. Caochangdi PhotoSpring is part of the 2010 Croisements Festival, presented in partnership with the French Embassy in China and curated jointly by Thinking Hands Culture and the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre. It is organized in collaboration with “Les Rencontres d’Arles” and with the support of the galleries of Caochangdi.

In recognition of our mutual interest in documentary and fine art photography, Daylight Magazine and the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University have started an international competition, the Daylight/CDS Photo Awards, to honor and promote talented and committed photographers, both emerging and established.

Two awards, a PROJECT PRIZE and a WORK-IN-PROCESS PRIZE. Winners announced mid-June, 2010

PROJECT PRIZE

ONE FIRST PRIZE WINNER | SIX JUROR’S PICK PRIZE WINNERS | TEN HONORABLE MENTIONS
For an extended documentary project or fine art series. Edit photographs with care as the project photographs will be judged on the coherence of the work as a whole. The full panel of jurors will choose one First Prize Winner. Each Guest Juror will also select one photographer to receive a Juror’s Pick Prize and write a short statement about why he or she choose the work. The First Prize Winner will receive a solo exhibition at the Center for Documentary Studies, a multimedia Daylight podcast, a feature in CDS’s newsmagazine Document, presentation in Daylight and CDS online galleries, and $1,000 for exhibition-related expenses. Juror’s Pick Winners will be part of a group exhibition at the Center for Documentary Studies and featured in Daylight and CDS online galleries. Ten Honorable Mentions will be named on Daylight and CDS websites. 20 IMAGES, ONE-PAGE ARTIST’S STATEMENT, AND CV. $60. DEADLINE: MAY 15, 2010, 8 P.M. (EST).

In June 2007 two leading photographers – RongRong, from China and inri, from Japan – founded the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre in Beijing’s vibrant new art district, Caochangdi. The Centre is the first contemporary art space dedicated exclusively to photography and video art in China. The 4,600 square meter complex includes 880 square meters of gallery space and was designed by renowned artist and architect Ai Weiwei.

Three Shadows aims to become the most professional and comprehensive platform for the promotion of photography and video art in the country.
