FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2009 Closing Notes
Hi Folks,
Finally, after more than six weeks of trekking to opening receptions, lectures, screenings, dinners, lunches, brunches and other art and social engagements, the FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2009 Photography Festival – our 15th Anniversary – has come to a close. For those of you who have not had a chance to visit, a few fine exhibits will remain on display well into November and December, and at least a couple of them will be around through the first months of of 2010. Dates and times are available in the 2009 Exhibitions & Events Schedule section of our web site.
We are very thankful for your participation and interest in FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA. It is with the collaboration, the support, and the efforts of everyone involved – exhibiting artists, institutions, private galleries and businesses, curators, the public, the media, city government, government entities of other countries, etc. – that our unique festival has become such a successful endeavor.
Defying all economy-based predictions, FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2009, with over seventy exhibitions and events spread out between the last week in August and the first week in October, has been one of our largest and longest festivals on record, and has also, surprisingly, generated substantial sales of photographic art. Additionally, if you browse through the FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2009 exhibits posted in our SAFOTO Blog (we were able to include most of them) you will notice that the ingestibles at opening receptions (food, beverages, etc.) were copious, to say the least. This catering extravaganza, plus the the printing, mounting and framing of all the works on display, the promotional printed matter, the advertising, the signage at galleries, the bands, musicians, DJ’s and other entertainment at various venues, the flowers and decorations, gasoline and travel expenses, impulse purchases, etc., etc.; make for a very significant economic footprint, which is one of the salient sources of pride for our festival.
But ultimately, the most important aspect of the FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA Festival is the personal commitment of creative capital that you – each and every one of you – bring to bear every year for the benefit of the many communities and constituencies that compose the City of San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country.
We hope to see you all again in 2010, when – in partnership with the City of San Antonio Office of Cultural Affairs and the Instituto Cultural de Mexico – FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA-SAFOTO will join in the commemorative celebrations for the centennial of the 1910 Mexican Revolution and the bicentennial of the 1810 Mexican Wars of Independence from Spain. The general (non-compulsory) theme suggested for participants in FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2010 will be An Interpretive Contemporary Approach to Revolution and Independence in Mexico: The Significance of Cultural Migration and the Social and Economic Impact of These Events in Texas. This may sound like a mouthful of academic artspeak, but it is just a general theme and the emphasis is on Interpretive and Contemporary, which allows for a wide berth of expressive options.
We wish you all good fortune and good health, and a wonderful holiday season.

Instituto Cultural De Mexico

For the last three years, FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA has maintained a solid working partnership with the Instituto Cultural De Mexico, which for the last couple of years has been the main site for the FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA Signature Exhibits. Our Signature Exhibits encompass a series of individual exhibits that reflect a range of work that we, as festival organizers, like to see. In the case of the Instituto Cultural De Mexico (which sits right in the middle of Hemisfair Park, in downtown San Antonio), the four well appointed galleries inside the building make for a unique opportunity to present these exhibits of our choice (for this, the 2009 Festival, there are three other FOTOSEPTIEMBRE Signature Exhibits in different San Antonio locations).

Our partnership with the Instituto Cultural De Mexico has been solidified by the presence of Gabriela Franco Palafox, the current Director of the institution, whose enthusiasm, energy, and administrative expertise are a welcome source of support for our efforts.

Most of them on display until the end of October, 2009, the four 2009 Signature Exhibits in the galleries at the Instituto Cultural De Mexico are:

The Mini Series II, curated by Michael Mehl, which includes a group of mini exhibits of small prints by Fernanda Chemale (Brazil), Tom Drahos (France), Alastair Magnaldo (France), Erwin Staeheli (Switzerland), Philipp Scholz Rittermann (California), and Berthold Steinhilber (Germany).

Nuevo Leon: Imagenes De Nuestra Memoria, a selection of period images from the archives of the Fototeca De Nuevo Leon, also curated by Michael Mehl. This exhibit will remain on display until the end of 2009.

The Mexico Of Leo Matiz, an exhibit of vintage and contemporary prints of images by Leo Matiz (1917-1998), the Colombian-Mexican master of photography. The exhibition is coordinated by the Instituto Cultural De Mexico with support from the Leo Matiz Foundation (Colombia).

The Way I Sí It, a group show that features images by Say Sí alumnae, and is curated by Guillermina Zabala, Artist/Media Arts Program Director at Say Sí, an arts learning center for middle- and high-school students. The young exhibiting San Antonio artists are: Miles FerminBrian GonzalezElizabeth GonzalezYvonne HernandezOlivia HinojosaTim LefkowitzMark Martinez, Michael Martinez, Michael S. Martinez, Yoomi Park, Antonio Rodriguez, Ashley Sanchez, and Araselle Vivenza.

All these exhibits are the result of over eighteen months of planning and coordination, and would not have been possible without the invaluable support of our 2009 Festival Partners: Instituto Cultural de Mexico, Secretaria de Relaciones Exteriores, CONARTE Nuevo Leon, Fototeca de Nuevo Leon, Leo Matiz Foundation, SAPL Imaging, and Say Sí.

San Antonio Museum Of Art

Having joined FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA in the last few years, the San Antonio Museum of Art has already established itself as a must-go, must-see destination for fans and enthusiasts of photography. More importantly, the quality and scholarly cred of the exhibits presented at SAMA in conjunction with FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA, have helped to enhance our community’s perception and understanding of the photographic arts.

Currently on display through February of 2010 is Culinary Delights: Photographs By David Halliday, an exhibit of images by New Orleans photographer David Halliday, curated by David Rubin, SAMA’s Brown Foundation Curator of Contemporary Art.

Corollary to the exhibit is A Conversation With David Halliday, a continuation of the highly informative series of interviews and lectures regularly conducted by David Rubin with guest artists.

Southwest School Of Art & Craft

The Southwest School of Art & Craft presents the FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA exhibit The Universe Next Door, a survey of images from throughout the lengthy career of Abelardo Morell, one of the country’s most prolific and fascinating photographic provocateurs, devoted to exploring how people see the world around them.

Abelardo Morell’s preoccupation with reality and illusion has taken him from creating camera-obscura images in various places around the world, to his more recent work as the Alturas Foundation Artist-in-Residence, focusing on re-framed interpretations of South Texas landscapes. This FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA exhibit was produced by Southwest School of Art & Craft Exhibitions Director, Kathy Armstrong, in collaboration with, and funded by, Alturas Foundation.

In conjunction with the exhibition, which is on display in the Russell Hill Rogers Galleries in the Navarro Campus, producer and director Allie Humenuk is presenting her documentary on Morell’s life and work, Shadow of the House (2007), which will be screened on four occasions during the length of the exhibition.

Morell (b. 1948) and his family fled their homeland of Cuba in 1962, moving to New York City. Today, he’s well known in the photographic community, having been awarded the Cintas Foundation fellowship in 1992 and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 1993, and the Rappaport Foundation Prize in 2006.  Morell earned a BFA from Bowdoin College in 1977, and an MFA from Yale University School of Art in 1981. He’s currently a Professor of Photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, and represented by Bonni Benrubi Gallery, New York.

Throughout his career, Morell has used photographs to transform how we see everyday objects, sometimes by casting them into magical, surprising perspectives that call into question our understanding of size and distance.  So it’s not surprising that Morell published an edition of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland filled with photographs that showed household objects, books, or maps but through a wondrous lens.

Perhaps his best know and most ambitious series are his camera-obscura images (long exposure photographs in which the outside world is projected upside down along the walls of the room), which were the subjects of a worldwide traveling exhibition in 2002, Abelardo Morell and the Camera Eye, and have been widely reproduced in books and shown at numerous exhibitions.

His current work, shot in the Texas wilderness during 2008-2009, also challenges the viewer’s perception of reality and how people see it.

Also showing at the Southwest School of Art & Craft as part of FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA is The Sacred And Profane Human Condition, a series of images by Wisconsin photographer Kim Borst, curated by Southwest School of Art & Craft Photography Department Chair, Victor Pagona, which is on display in the San Antonio Express-News Photography Gallery, in the Navarro Campus.
