• One9Zero6 Gallery

One of the original pioneers of the South Flores Art District and a pivotal presence in San Antonio’s creative community, One9Zero6 Gallery -and its attendant coterie of creative businesses, BZ Designs, Benavides Framing, etc.- owned and operated by artists/entrepreneurs Andy and Yvette Benavides, is the anchor for the Second Saturday art events in this artist haven, South of downtown. The gallery is hosting the exhibit The Road To Patrick Chamusso, a series of images from South Africa and Japan by local photographer Red Baklava.

• Gallista Gallery

Another founding pioneer of the South Flores Art District is Joe Lopez, artist, owner, and manager of the art complex that houses Gallista Gallery, a coffee shop, gift shop, and a plethora of artist studios where much of San Antonio’s most notable Latino art is produced and stored. Gallista Gallery (across the street from One9Zero6) is hosting the exhibits Portraits From The Golden Age Of Mexican Cinema, from the collection of Raymond Rojas, and Views Of San Antonio by Robert Garza.

• Xóchitl Contemporary Art

We don’t have an award for this, but we can recognize, categorically state, and officially declare, that the designation of smallest and most efficient use of an exhibition space for the FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA 2008 Festival, goes to Xóchitl Contemporary Art -housed within the Gallista Gallery Art Complex- the brainchild and ward of young artists/entrepreneurs Stephanie Torres and Alejandro Padilla. Their efforts bring a refreshing sense of seriousness and professionalism to San Antonio’s art community. Xóchitl Contemporary Art is hosting the Reinvented Stories exhibit of images by San Antonio artist Rose Cosme.

• COSAS – Boerne

One of the finest Mexican Crafts stores we have seen this side of the border, COSAS, owned and operated by collectors Bob and Amy Niederhauser, features the exhibit Gente De Chiapas, by photographer and Chiapas resident, Cisco Dietz. The stark images in Cisco Dietz’s photographs stand out in their monochromatic simplicity among the ornate, filled-to-the-gills, merchandise displays all over the shop.

• Bella Creo – Boerne

Staunch supporters and drum-beaters for FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA, Charles and Tami Kegley, artists, gallery owners and community activists, open up the doors of their gallery, Bella Creo, to photography exhibits every year. Aside form curating two other photo exhibits in town, they are hosting Boerne Icons, a series of images of interesting characters and places in Boerne, by both Charles and Tami. • Dodging Duck Brewhaus – Boerne

If there ever were an award for the best Duchampian juxtapositioning of photographic images with themed restaurant decor, the prize would go to the Dodging Duck Brewhaus, Boerne’s very own, very excellent microbrewery. Curated by Charles and Tami Kegley, of Bella Creo, the exhibit Inland Surfers, by Erich Schlegel, fittingly features images of quirky juxtapositions of surfboards in unlikely backgrounds and situations, which are mirrored by the unusual placement of the photographs within the Brewhaus.
